Information About The Pill

picture of the pill compact dispenser Women's lives were forever changed when the birth control pill was introduced in 1960. We were finally in control of our own birth control and could have sex without worrying about getting pregnant. We all have Margaret Sanger to thank for the invention of the birth control, who funded the research to bring the pill to life. Did the introduction of the birth control pill start the sexual revolution? What do you think?

The birthcontol pill is a daily dose of the hormnes estrogen and progesterone to prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation. Most combination pills come in either a 21-day pack or a 28-day pack. One pill is taken everyday at the same time of day for either 21 or 28 days. You have your normal period on the days you are not taking any pills with the 21-day pack or on the last 7 days of a 28-day pack. There is also a new product to the market in which you take the pill for 3 months and then have a period for one week giving you only 4 periods a year. There is also a progesterne only mini-pill, safe in breast feeding, that is taken everyday, but it may not be as effective as the estrogen and progesterone pill.

The pill works the best when taken at the same time everyday. If you miss a day, please read the package insert for specific instructions to prevent pregnancy. The pill is very effective as long as the pill is taken at the same time everyday, and you are not taking any other medications that could interfere with the pill. The pill does not protect against STD so barrier devices will still need to be used. Birth contol pills are perscribed by a physician after a pelvic exam and a negative pregnancy test. A package of birth control pills usually costs about $20 - $50 a month depending on the type. Please seek the advice of your healthcare provider to decide what type of birth control is best for you.

There is new combination birth control pill on the market which contains to w types of hormones, progestin and estrogen. This is a low dose pil which means that it contains less than .035 milligrams of hormone estrogen. Low doses of the hormone have been shown to be as effective as high doses with lower side effects. One of the combination pills known as Yaz also contains the hormone dsrp also known as drospirenone which is the progestin in Yaz. You can visit www.yaz.com if you have questions about this particular birthcontrol product. This site does not endorse any particular birthcontrol brand but rather is providing general information for those researching birthcontroll options.
